Following Kemi Badenoch‘s selection as Conservative Party Leader, the fightback for the soul of the party STARTS NOW.
We stand at a pivotal moment in our great Conservative party’s history. We have a choice. Do we listen to the people and return to the popular, election winning and moderate, one nation way? Or do we bury our heads in the sand as Labour did in 2017, pretend nothing is wrong and lurch to the extreme?
The radical right pose just as much of a threat as the radical left we saw run Labour from 2015 to 2020. In a time of polarisation and deep distrust in politics, we have to stand firm against the tide of populism, left or right, for if we do not, our very democracy is at stake.
We have to fight for our party. If we fail, our country will face a Labour government for longer - with all the harm that would bring. We need to restore sensible leadership before the next election, so we can win and put our great party back into the service of the people.
It will be tough - there’s no denying that. But if we fail to change, if we fail to learn our own lessons, we will condemn ourselves to losing over and over, just as Labour did.
Are you in for the fight to save the soul of our great Conservative Party? I know I am.
#OneNationOneParty
Strong Leadership. Value Led. Courage To Act.
These are the things we not only need to put at the core of who we are, we need to show the country that we live by these things.
We have a huge task. If we can choose Strong Leadership, that’s Value Led and has the Courage To Act then we stand to win back the trust of the people. If we get this right at the first chance we have, we can show the country we listened and we understand. If we get this wrong, we will be in opposition for a very long time and the country will not trust us to govern. We can’t let that happen - we are the party of Government, so we must behave in such a manner.
These aren’t just slogans or an attempt to be noble. This isn’t arguing what our policies should be - that is a platform we must build together, recognising our differences. What matters first is not whether our policies are more or less “conservative,” or whether we are too conservative or not conservative enough. We will do this work together as members and a party - rediscovering who we are, with a renewed sense of determination and energy to deliver. What matters before specific policies, are the foundations of trust that we need to build from scratch with the people, if we are to have any hope of returning to government. These are those foundations - without them, our policies, whatever they may be, will not matter.
We will never all agree on every policy, no political party will, but we must stay as one family in order to win. We will not win if we are divided. We will not win if we put ourselves first or if we allow hate to go without consequence.
We need Strong Leadership - leadership willing to take the tough decisions to transform our party and resist the forces of the extreme. After cleaning house of the extreme left, Labour has returned to power. We can too, if we have the leadership required to clear our house of the extreme right.
If we have strong leadership, willing to do what is right no matter the cost, willing to say what needs to be said - even if it brings unpopularity or even willing to stand their ground and tackle the questions that are never politically advantageous - then we can win.
The country wants a leader we can feel safe with, one who the country believes will protect us and help us when we fall. The country wants a leader who puts us, the people, before themselves or the party. That takes strong leadership.
We need to be Value Led - that means service, duty, selflessness, integrity and honesty. We need to be the only party that truly puts the country before itself and does not shy away from difficult issues because we may suffer.
When we abandon our values and use the extremes to win, we lose. When we abandon our values and allow the extreme right to reverse progress, we lose. When we abandon our values and blame minority groups for our issues, we lose.
We can announce as many popular policies as we want - if the public do not know what we stand for or what our values are, they will not trust us to deliver. If they do not know who we are at our core, they will not vote for us.
We need to have the courage to act - that means when the going gets tough and it’s easier to bury our heads in the sand, instead we have to stand tall and be resilient in the face of adversity. How can we expect the country to trust us to deliver, if we are too cowardly to act?
Whether it be on a contentious issue or an individual who uses populism to win or uses minority groups to win votes by demonising them - if we won‘t act, we cannot expect the country to trust us to govern.
If the public trust us to have the courage to act on the most unpopular of issues, the issues parties dare not tackle for fear of losing - the public will see that we are the only party who can deliver. Not only will the public trust us, but we will cement our great party’s legacy of delivery and of fundamentally changing our country for the better.
